Summary/Objective
The Maintenance Manager for Fleet Operations is a key leadership role responsible for overseeing the maintenance and management of the organization’s fleet of equipment. This position requires a strategic thinker with strong organizational and communication skills. This position will lead a team of mechanics and heavy-duty repairmen to coordinate all maintenance activities to ensure the compliance, reliability, safety, and efficiency of the fleet. Additionally, this role is responsible for sourcing and procuring parts, managing inventory, and reporting on a regular basis.
Requirements/Responsibilities
The following duties are essential for achieving this objective:
Supervision & Leadership - Lead and supervise a team of maintenance technicians; provide guidance, training, and support to ensure a high level of performance within the team; and foster a culture of safety, accountability, and continuous improvement.
Maintenance Planning and Coordination - Comply with regulatory entities including all signatory unions; develop and implement a comprehensive maintenance plan for the organization's fleet of equipment; coordinate and schedule maintenance activities to ensure minimal disruption to fleet operations; and collaborate with Dispatch to plan and execute maintenance projects and emergency repairs.
Vendor Management - Manage relationships with external vendors and contractors for specialized maintenance services and obtain quotes, negotiate contracts, and ensure the quality of work performed by external service providers.
Budget Oversight - Assist in the development and refinement of the fleet maintenance budget; monitor and manage expenditures, ensuring cost-effective use of resources; identify opportunities for cost savings without compromising the reliability and safety of the fleet; and approve all maintenance/shop/rigging invoices.
Compliance & Documentation - Ensure compliance with safety regulations and standards for fleet maintenance including USDOT, FMSCA, CARB, Caltrans, and other regulatory bodies; maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, inspections, and equipment history; and collaborate with regulatory agencies as necessary.
Continuous Improvement - Identify areas for improvement in fleet maintenance processes and implement efficiency measures; stay informed about industry best practices and emerging technologies in fleet maintenance.
Inventory Management - Develop and implement effective inventory management strategies to optimize stock levels for critical parts and materials; implement cost-effective inventory control measures to minimize carrying costs while ensuring the availability of essential components; and coordinate with maintenance technicians to understand their requirements and ensure that necessary parts are on hand to minimize downtime.
If position is filled with a non-union candidate, the role may not assist or conduct hands-on maintenance tasks of equipment.
Qualifications
- (Required) 3+ years experience managing employees
- (Required) Strong background in heavy equipment maintenance
- (Preferred) Bachelor's Degree or certificate in related discipline
- (Preferred) Have a valid CDL and clean driving record
- Must communicate effectively and professionally with vendors, leadership, and other employees.
- Able to lift up to 40 lbs.
- Computer literate with the ability to process information.
